Apple’s iPhone Duo China price will start at 15,999 yuan when the company’s first foldable iPhone goes on sale Oct. 23. For investors watching Apple’s position in Greater China, the immediate question is whether buyers will pay a 5,000-yuan premium over Xiaomi’s new conventional foldable in a market already packed with established local options.

Pre-orders are scheduled to begin Oct. 16, CNBC reported. Apple describes the Duo as its first foldable iPhone, a device that opens to provide a larger display while retaining an outer screen for use when closed.

The launch matters beyond a single handset. Greater China generated about 17% of Apple’s total revenue, according to Apple financial statements cited by CNBC. Huawei led China’s overall smartphone market in the first and second quarters, while Apple ranked second, Counterpoint data cited by CNBC showed.

How does the iPhone Duo price compare in China?

Apple’s 15,999-yuan starting price puts the Duo between two newly announced Chinese rivals:

  • Xiaomi’s 18 Fold starts at 10,999 yuan, making the Duo 5,000 yuan more expensive.
  • Huawei’s Mate XT2 trifold starts at 19,999 yuan, placing the Duo 4,000 yuan below it.

The comparison is useful because these are different kinds of foldable phones. A conventional foldable opens once like a book, while Huawei’s trifold uses additional folding sections to expand into a larger screen. Apple is pricing its first entry above Xiaomi’s book-style option, but below Huawei’s higher-end trifold.

Huawei, Xiaomi, Honor, Oppo and Vivo already sell foldable devices in China, according to CNBC. Their offerings include book-style and flip-phone designs, and Huawei also sells trifold models. Apple is therefore joining a category Chinese consumers already know, rather than introducing a new phone format to the market.

Why could eSIM be a hurdle for iPhone Duo buyers?

The iPhone Duo has no physical SIM-card slot, CNBC and the South China Morning Post reported. It instead uses eSIM, a digital subscriber identity that connects a phone to a mobile carrier without a removable card.

That setup may add friction in mainland China. The South China Morning Post reported that carriers require real-name registration and that activating or moving eSIM service requires in-person identity checks at carrier stores. CNBC likewise reported that buyers may need to visit a store for ID verification.

Early online discussion should not be read as a measure of demand. CNBC said individual WeChat users focused on whether the Duo justified its price, while the South China Morning Post reported attention on Weibo, including a hashtag about the phone’s folding animation. Those posts show initial interest and concerns, not representative consumer polling or sales results.

Apple’s launch sets up a straightforward commercial test: whether its brand and product design can support a meaningful price premium over Xiaomi’s foldable while avoiding the 19,999-yuan level of Huawei’s Mate XT2. The answer will depend on orders and sales after the Oct. 23 release, neither of which is yet available.
