BitMEX is preparing to close, giving crypto traders a fixed timetable to exit positions and pull funds from the platform. For retail investors, the key issue is practical: open trades will face staged restrictions before the exchange shuts down on Sept. 23, 2026, at 04:00 UTC.

HDR Global Trading Limited, the owner and operator of BitMEX, said Thursday that it had decided to end exchange operations after a “strategic review of the business and the broader industry.” BitMEX also said it has already stopped accepting new account registrations.

BitMEX is a crypto derivatives exchange. Derivatives are contracts whose value is tied to an underlying asset, such as Bitcoin or Ether, rather than a spot purchase of the asset itself. That structure can make shutdown planning more complex than a regular account closure, because traders may have open contracts that need to be reduced or closed before the venue goes offline.

According to BitMEX, trading will continue under normal conditions until Aug. 26. After that date, the exchange will no longer allow users to open new positions. Traders will be limited to reducing existing positions, meaning they can lower or exit exposure but cannot add to it.

The company said it will then begin force-closing open positions as part of an orderly wind-down. Any positions still open when the shutdown deadline arrives will be closed automatically, according to BitMEX.

Users will still be able to log in and withdraw remaining balances after the exchange stops operating, BitMEX said. The company also said accounts that continue to hold funds after the closure will eventually be charged a monthly account fee.

BitMEX urged customers to close positions and withdraw assets before the Sept. 23 deadline. The company shared the same shutdown notice through its official X account on Thursday.

The closure marks the end of a long-running crypto derivatives venue that had focused on trading products linked to digital assets. BitMEX did not give additional financial details about the decision in the shutdown notice beyond citing its strategic review.

For users, the timeline now matters more than the reason. The exchange has laid out three key dates: sign-ups are already closed, normal trading ends on Aug. 26, and operations end on Sept. 23 at 04:00 UTC. After Aug. 26, customers with open trades will be dealing with a shrinking set of choices as BitMEX winds down the market.
