France Spain wildfire forces evacuations as fire cloud grows
A rare fire cloud over France and Spain has burned hundreds of thousands of acres and forced more than 300,000 people to evacuate.

A France Spain wildfire emergency has forced more than 300,000 people from their homes and burned hundreds of thousands of acres across parts of France and Spain, CNBC reported. The scale matters because this is not a routine forest fire: firefighters described it as a rare fire-driven cloud system that can produce its own storms and make conditions harder to control.
The fire began last Wednesday in Gironde in southwest France, according to CNBC. It has affected France’s Bordeaux region and areas around Avila and Toledo in western Madrid, with nearly 104,000 acres burned in France and about 190,000 acres burned in those Spanish areas, CNBC reported.
France has recorded almost 250,000 acres burned since the start of the year, CNBC reported, in a situation described as “unprecedented” and “historic.” The evacuations are among the largest in the country, according to CNBC.
What is a pyrocumulonimbus fire cloud?
A pyrocumulonimbus is a fire-generated thundercloud. Nicolas Braz, a firefighter captain, told AFP that this rare and dangerous kind of fire cloud can create its own thunderstorms, winds and whirlwinds, making the fire “erratic and unmanageable.”
That mechanism is why the wildfire is especially dangerous. A normal fire can be pushed by weather. A pyrocumulonimbus can help create its own local weather, adding wind shifts and storm activity that complicate firefighting efforts.
Where are people evacuating?
Images distributed by AFP, Getty Images and Anadolu showed evacuees arriving at the Parc des Expositions de Bordeaux-Lac, which has been converted into a reception center for people displaced by the fires affecting the Gironde department. Another AFP image showed displaced people taking refuge at the Parc des expositions de Bordeaux.
Other photographs showed the fire burning near Saint-Jean-d’Illac, about 30 kilometers from Bordeaux, and near Lege-Cap-Ferret in southwestern France. AFP images also showed firefighters beside a vehicle in Saint-Jean-d’Illac and aircraft dropping water or fire retardant near affected areas.
