Spider-Man: Brand New Day box office results have given Sony and Marvel a new domestic opening-weekend record. The film brought in a reported $360 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales, according to CNBC and Variety, surpassing the $357 million debut of Avengers: Endgame in 2019. For investors watching Sony’s film business, the result marks the studio’s largest opening and the biggest launch in the Spider-Man franchise.

The record is for the domestic, or North American, opening weekend, and the comparison is not adjusted for inflation. That distinction matters: box-office reports measure ticket revenue, not the number of people who attended, and the record covers the film’s first weekend rather than its eventual theatrical total.

How did Spider-Man: Brand New Day beat Avengers: Endgame?

The record emerged after the weekend estimate changed. CNBC reported on Aug. 2 that Brand New Day was projected to open with $355 million, about $2 million below Endgame’s record. That estimate used a Sony projection of $84 million for Sunday.

Sunday ticket sales instead reached $88.7 million, CNBC reported. The stronger-than-projected Sunday was followed by a reported $360 million final opening tally, putting the film ahead of Endgame by about $3 million based on the rounded figures. Variety also reported that the final total exceeded the earlier $355 million estimate.

CNBC listed $169.3 million in Friday sales, including presales, and $101.5 million on Saturday. The later reported weekend total should be treated as the final result, rather than calculated from those daily figures.

What other records did the film set?

CNBC said the launch was the largest opening weekend in Sony Pictures history and the strongest for the Spider-Man series. Sony’s prior studio record was Spider-Man: No Way Home, which opened to $260.1 million in 2021, according to Deadline.

The film reached the domestic record without playing on Imax screens. CNBC reported that The Odyssey held those screens, while Dolby Cinema, ScreenX and 4DX each reported record ticket sales for Brand New Day. An earlier CNBC report, citing EntTelligence, estimated 24.1 million moviegoers saw the film in the U.S. and Canada, with about 21% of tickets sold for premium large-format screenings at an average price of $18.55.

Reports differ on the film’s worldwide opening total, with CNBC and Variety reporting $932 million while other outlets reported $927 million. The domestic record does not depend on that global figure.
