Trump’s CNN, MS NOW and Politico ban claim lacks enforcement details

President Donald Trump said the Trump CNN MS NOW Politico ban was effective immediately, accusing the three outlets of publishing what he called false and overly negative coverage. Trump made the declaration in a Truth Social post on Sept. 18, then addressed it during an Oval Office event later that day. He also warned that other media organizations could be next.
According to CNN, Trump did not identify specific reports that prompted his decision or explain how the White House would put the restriction into practice. The network reported that its White House journalists remained in their workspace Friday evening, while a CNN crew was traveling with Vice President JD Vance as the assigned television pool.

Trump said the ban had taken effect, but the reporting available Friday did not show that the White House had issued an order, laid out access rules or removed the targeted outlets’ credentials. The White House referred CNBC to Trump’s Oval Office remarks when asked for comment.
At that appearance, Trump described the decision as a response to “cumulative stories” and said he thought it was worthwhile to call out the outlets even if the move did not survive in court. He said he did not want the organizations in his office or at the White House, according to CNN.
CNN said it stood behind its White House team and that a ban, if carried out, would be an illegal attack on constitutionally protected press rights. Politico said it would continue reporting on the White House and would defend its First Amendment rights. MS NOW had no immediate comment, CNBC reported.
Why the legal fight could matter
The First Amendment protects freedom of the press. Press-freedom advocates said a White House access restriction based on an outlet’s coverage would raise a constitutional issue because it would treat journalists differently according to viewpoint. Arthur Spitzer, an American Civil Liberties Union lawyer, told CNBC that the government should not bar news organizations from official events because of their reporting.
The announcement comes after earlier disputes over press access. In 2018, CNN successfully challenged the revocation of then-correspondent Jim Acosta’s press credentials; a federal judge temporarily restored his access on due-process grounds, and the White House later reinstated the credentials permanently, CNN reported.
More recently, the administration restricted Associated Press journalists from certain smaller White House settings, including the Oval Office and Air Force One, amid a dispute over the naming of the Gulf of Mexico. CNBC reported that a federal judge ruled in April 2025 that action contrary to the First Amendment, though an appeals court paused the ruling while the administration appealed. No court ruling had been issued on Trump’s latest announcement.
