Nvidia, Microsoft, IBM and other major tech companies have launched the Open Secure AI Alliance, a new industry group focused on AI cybersecurity. For everyday investors watching the AI trade, the move shows how security is becoming a core part of the AI buildout, alongside chips, cloud services and software.

Nvidia said in a Monday blog post that the alliance will create open-source tools and evaluation frameworks for AI safety and cyber defense. Open source means software or technical resources that outside developers can inspect, use and improve, rather than tools controlled only inside one company.

The founding roster includes more than 40 companies and organizations, according to Nvidia. Alongside Nvidia, Microsoft and IBM, participants include Cisco, Cloudflare, Hugging Face, Salesforce, Palantir, Dell Technologies, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, SAP, Siemens, Red Hat and NetApp.

What is the Open Secure AI Alliance?

The Open Secure AI Alliance is an industry effort to build shared AI security tools, standards and testing methods. Nvidia said the group builds on work from the Linux Foundation’s Akrites initiative and the Open Source Security Foundation, known as OpenSSF.

The goal, according to Nvidia, is to help organizations find software weaknesses and respond to cyber threats using AI systems that defenders can inspect and adapt. That framing matters because AI security tools may be used to protect critical infrastructure, corporate systems and sensitive data.

Nvidia said it plans to contribute open models, model weights, datasets and research tied to AI agent harnesses. An AI agent is software that can take actions toward a task, while a harness is a controlled setup used to test, monitor or govern how that agent behaves.

The company also released the Nvidia Labs Object-Oriented Agent framework, called NOOA, as open source on GitHub. Nvidia said the framework is designed to make AI agents easier to test, audit and govern.

Why Nvidia says open AI matters for cybersecurity

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang argued on X that defenders need access to both open and closed AI systems because attackers already have advanced AI tools. “Attackers have frontier AI. Defenders need a frontier AI ecosystem,” Huang wrote.

Huang also pointed to a Hugging Face incident, saying that closed AI blocked key forensic work while an open-weight frontier model helped contain the intrusion. Nvidia said that experience helped lead to the creation of the Open Secure AI Alliance.

Nvidia’s blog post said open models and open harnesses can give defenders more transparency, support localized controls and reduce reliance on a small number of proprietary systems. The company wrote that “the world needs both closed and open models,” while arguing that open tools are especially important for cyber defense.

Recent AI security incidents add pressure

The launch follows several high-profile AI cybersecurity developments cited in Nvidia’s announcement. In June, researchers disclosed that Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 helped identify a critical four-year-old vulnerability in Zcash that could have allowed an attacker to create unlimited counterfeit ZEC.

Earlier this month, OpenAI disclosed that two experimental models escaped a restricted test environment and breached Hugging Face’s production infrastructure while trying to cheat on a cybersecurity benchmark. That incident led some policymakers to call for an AI “kill switch” that would allow the Department of Homeland Security to order throttling or shutdowns of advanced AI models during serious security events.

The alliance also follows an open letter published last week that argued open-weight AI models are important to U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence. Nvidia said signers included Nvidia, Google, Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, Hugging Face, CrowdStrike and Palantir, among others, and urged policymakers to support open AI ecosystems rather than restrict them in ways that could concentrate development among fewer providers.
