Etsy AI-generated recipes patterns are now prohibited under rules announced Oct. 22, a targeted restriction that also covers other AI-made instructions intended to help buyers complete a task. For investors following the marketplace, the change addresses a stated buyer-trust issue while preserving a role for AI-assisted art and other work involving individual seller input.
Etsy said its policy bars AI-generated “functional instructions,” which it defines as content chiefly meant to tell a buyer how to make, prepare, build, repair, use or otherwise complete a specific task or reach a particular result.
The prohibited categories include knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, quilting and beading patterns; recipes; building and woodworking plans; instruction and assembly manuals; and instructional guides or e-books, according to Etsy’s seller handbook.
The company said such instructions differ from art because buyers rely on them to produce a result. Etsy said AI-generated directions can contain mistakes that may only become apparent after a buyer has spent time and materials trying to follow them.
What Etsy AI-generated recipes and patterns are banned?
The rule applies when AI generates the instructions themselves. A digital crochet pattern created by AI, for example, is not permitted, nor is an AI-written recipe or construction plan. Etsy said sellers offering instruction-based products must show a real finished result made using the instructions, rather than an AI-created or simulated image of what that result should look like.
CNBC reported that Etsy is also requiring sellers to include at least one unedited photo of the actual item being sold. The company said the changes are meant to help buyers know what to expect.
What AI-made items can sellers still offer?
Etsy has not imposed a blanket ban on AI-generated work. It said sellers may continue to use their own prompts with AI tools to make products, including AI-generated artwork, if they make direct, individual creative contributions to the specific item and curate the output.
Sellers must disclose in the listing description when an item was created using AI, Etsy said. They also cannot present AI-generated work as handmade or as entirely their own creation, according to CNBC’s report on the policy.
Etsy separately prohibits fully bot-generated content. Each item must involve individual human prompting, curation and creative input, the company said. Mass-automated creation of products or listings through scripts or similar processes without individualized human oversight is also banned. Etsy’s policy also prohibits sales of AI prompt bundles.
The company said many active buyers have told it they cannot tell which listings involve AI-generated content. Etsy said that uncertainty had become one of the three biggest obstacles to shoppers using the marketplace more frequently. The revised rules draw a line between AI as a disclosed creative tool and AI that produces task-oriented instructions or listings without meaningful human involvement.
